A Financial Controller is primarily concerned with the integrity and reliability of the numbers themselves. Their role is operational. They ensure management accounts are accurate and timely, oversee compliance and reporting obligations, manage cash flow visibility and bring structure to the day-to-day running of finance.

For many businesses, particularly those between thirty and one hundred employees, this can be transformational. A strong Financial Controller introduces discipline and visibility into a company that may previously have relied heavily on external accountants or relatively informal processes.

A CFO operates at a different level.

The role is less about reporting what has happened and more about helping shape what happens next. Investors and boards begin expecting a more strategic finance voice around the table. Financial modelling, funding strategy and long-term planning become increasingly important.
